Carr Lane, Willerby, Hull
Looking back on 2010-11

Another year packed with excitement and fun! Here are just a few of the highlights…

In October, the children undertook a sponsored walk to Cottingham and back across the fields, and raised a massive £2857.51 for our link school, Kirima Primary, in Uganda. The biggest challenge was getting hundreds of children across the stile. Our link school is very basically equipped and the money raised paid for 19 children to attend the rural school, to get clothed and fed and to receive medical treatment for a whole year.

In November, BBC Radio 4 recorded a fact-based play called “Blue Eyed Boy”, at Willerby Carr Lane Primary! The play tells the real life story of one of the 84 children who were evacuated from London to Willerby Carr Lane School during World War II!

Like most of the country during the winter, we were snowed up and had to close for 3 days. Thanks to a ‘Ground Force’ team of parents and children we managed to clear the paths and driveways and re-open earlier than anticipated.

Pupils had an exciting opportunity to sharpen their journalism skills when they interviewed Nick Barmby. Nick very kindly took time out of his busy schedule to visit the pupils hot off the Tigers 5-1 away win against Scunthorpe. The budding reporters had lots of thought provoking questions for Nick and eagerly noted down his responses. They discovered how he had once played on the school pitch as a young lad and how he had worked hard to develop his game from a young age.

The Year 4 Hotshots Athletics team, became regional champions, setting a new record for the greatest winning margin in the competition at Costello!

Carr Lane’s Year 6 Entrepreneurs set up their own successful gift business. After building a business plan, sourcing their own materials and making their own products, their efforts culminated one Saturday in May, with the children selling their products at Beverley Saturday Market, where they had booked and dressed their own market stall.

During the year, we launched our new reading initiative. This is aimed at inspiring our children to really develop a love of books. The school has invested heavily in sets of books by very up to date and highly regarded authors which are appropriate to each age group. Teachers read a class book by a specific author and children are encouraged to borrow books from the class/ school library by the same author. The author changes every ½ term or
so. We had fantastic feedback from parents who tell us that their child had switched off their tv/computer and gone to bed early to read!!!!!!
Developing a real passion for reading provides life-long enjoyment and has untold benefits for the development of children’s comprehension, vocabulary and writing.

We welcomed Barclay, a black Labrador puppy, to our school assembly at just 8 weeks old. Barclay is being trained as an Assistance Dog for People with Disabilities by one of our parents. He is a regular visitor to the school and you can follow Barclay’s progress on ‘Barclay’s Blog’ on the school website.

At Christmas we ventured to take the entire school to the pantomime at the New Theatre. It was lovely to have the whole school family sharing in the same event. The children loved it and we plan to go again this year.

The ownership and management of the Out Of School Club was taken over by the OOS staff and the club re-sited to be within the grounds of the school. The staff are committed to providing high quality, safe, secure, reliable and affordable child-care provision.

Many congratulations should go to our newly reformed Parents and Friends Association. The new PFA committee organised many great fun events during the year culminating in a magnificent Summer Fair, complete with an exciting Police Helicopter landing on the school grounds.

The whole school has continued to reduce its Carbon Footprint. In the Office we have increased our use of more reliable, timely and greener means of communication such as email; parent texting service; electronic payment systems and the revamped school web-site. The pupils have continued to keep the staff in line by checking electrical items are switched off when not in use and that paper is recycled whenever possible.

Many thanks to all of our generous pupils for being so giving and
demonstrating their compassion throughout the year. We have been proud to support Harvest Festival, Remembrance Sunday, Children in Need, Operation Christmas Child, Good Sam, Comic Relief and the Race for Life.
